Although the ELD rule was finalized in 2015, a “grandfather” clause was established giving companies who already use AOBRDs four years to fully comply. This allows for the seamless transition from legacy devices to the current technology that ELDs provide, paving the way for safer transportation of goods on our roadways.

What makes AOBRDs different than ELDs? AOBRDs (automatic onboard recording devices) synchronize to the specific commercial motor vehicle (CMV) to which it is installed and produce paper record of duty statuses (RODS). In comparison, ELDs allow drivers to report (RODS) electronically, making operations more environmentally friendly.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER:

December 18th, 2017. The FMCSA requires that ELD certified devices are installed by this deadline. Grandfathered AOBRDs already installed can continue to be used through December 2019.
December 16th, 2019. The “grandfather” clause ends. All companies required to file RODS must use an FAI MCSA-registered ELD device. AOBRDs are no longer acceptable.
